SOLOMONS ‘KWASO’ MAKER DRAWS 9-MONTH PRISON TERM

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Sept. 27) - A man from Gizo Island in the Western Solomon Islands was sentenced to nine months imprisonment on Monday in Gizo Magistrates Court after he was found guilty of distilling kwaso [home brew].

Police executed a search warrant at his house in Lire bay on Friday 22 September 2006 after receiving information from a concerned citizen who alleged the man was making kwaso at the house.

When police visited the house they confiscated utensils for making kwaso.

The man was later arrested and charged for distilling kwaso.

[PIR editor’s note: Police in the Solomon Islands have been waging a long battle against kwaso, which is blamed for rising crime and other social ills.]

Provincial Police Commander Western Province, Chief Superintendent Allan Waokea has urged members of the public, especially those living in the rural communities within Western Province, to come forward and report to police those engaged in such illegal activities.
