SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, Oct. 2) - The Republic of Fiji Military Forces has welcomed the new pay structure for its troops, which was recently approved by the Home Affairs Ministry.

Spokesman Captain Neumi Leweni says the new structure is a great morale booster for the soldiers.

Service allowances of FJ$25 [US$14] a day will be paid to soldiers who work and live in uncomfortable conditions for exceptionally long hours and are unable to enjoy leisure time.

Soldiers handling, transporting and disposing explosive devices receive explosive allowance ranging from FJ$25 to FJ$50 [US$14 to US$29] a day.

Navy divers who are qualified to disarm and clear explosive devices receive diving allowance ranging from FJ$35 to FJ$120 [US$20 to US$69] per hour.

Other payments include a transfer allowance, subsistence allowance and a ‘sevusevu’ [offering] allowance of FJ$10 [US$5] for performing traditional ceremonies for visitors of the RFMF.
