PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, Nov. 1) - Papua New Guinea noni juice will soon be selling on the shelves of shops in Japan and other Asian countries following the recent approval of a Japanese company to process and export PNG’s noni juice.

It will indeed be good news for PNG’s development and export of its natural resources to overseas markets.

General Fruits Ltd., a Japanese-owned company had recently been granted the green light to process and export PNG’s noni juice to markets in Japan and to other Asia countries were the demand for this fruit juice is high.

General Fruits Ltd had been buying noni juice from Samoa for its increasing markets in Japan but had discovered more and more people wanted noni juice from PNG. The company opened up an office at Taraka, outside Lae city and had been processing noni juice for Japanese markets.

The Japanese Health Ministry gave the approval for the company to process, pack and export PNG’s noni juice recently after the company satisfactorily met the health inspection requirements under the Japanese health laws. It also met the standards of the Japanese quality control board. This saw the company moving from the small processing space at Taraka to the Malahang Industrial Center where it had purchased two adjoining blocks of land.

The piece of land - 0.8 hectares - was purchased under the Industrial Centers Development Corporation (ICDC) land sale program. The company is now in the process of setting up processing and packing facilities for exporting noni juice.

Acting managing director of ICDC Leo Goina said they were happy to provide an avenue for PNG products to be developed, processed and exported overseas. .
