SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, Dec. 4) - Former Fiji Law Society president Graham Leung says it will be difficult to attract high caliber judges to serve on Fiji's High Court bench if they aren't paid better.

Leung said data from recent judicial salary reviews revealed that local judges were paid FJ$125,650 [US$75,852] while the average salaries of their counterparts in Australia, New Zealand and Canada were around FJ$379,000 [US$228,795].

"Even on an adjusted salary comparison, the trend displays a lag in Fiji judicial salaries of over 125 percent," he said.

Mr. Leung made the remarks at the 8th attorney general's Conference at the Warwick Fiji Resort on the coral coast yesterday.
