SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, Dec. 14) - Fiji's military has cut the size of some boards and replaced Fiji Electricity Authority chairman Joe Mar and Air Terminal Services executive chairman Isimeli Bainimara today.

Former FEA chief executive Nizam ud Dean replaces Mar and an appropriate director from the current ATS board is to take over from Bainimara as chairman.

The army said in a statement that Mar chaired Fiji Investment Corporation while chairing three other substantive boards in addition to having a full-time job as managing director of Telecom Fiji.

Army commander Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said the changes were to be effective immediately or at the latest by January 1, 2007.

"These changes are meant to rationalize board membership, remove political appointees of the previous government and cut abuse and wastage of public funds," Bainimarama said. "These boards are not to meet until they are otherwise directed."

Rewa chief Ro Filipe Tuisawau also takes over from Bainimara as ATS CEO.

Retired Airports Fiji CEO Jone Koroitamana is back at AFL as executive chairman while board members Viliame Leqa and Adish Naidu and CEO Ratu Sakiusa Tuisolia have been terminated.

Bainimara is also removed from the Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji Islands board along with Kenneth Zinck and Ofa Swann.

Post Fiji board members Malcolm Harrison, Lute Powell and Imrana Jalal are removed, cutting the board to five members.

Removed from the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited/Ports Terminal Limited boards are Fiji Trade and Investment Board CEO Lailun Khan, former Qarase government minister Jonetani Galuinadi and Aca Lord.

This also reduces the board to five members, with a new chairman to be appointed later.

Div Damodar has been appointed as replacement director.

The army is also looking at the possibility of merging the operations of the Housing Authority and the Public Rental Board.
