PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, Dec. 28) – Tona Primary School, in the Imbongu district in Papua New Guinea’s Southern Highlands province, was the proud recipient of more than PGK16,000 [US$57,000] cash.

The money was a collective contribution from PNG Party parliamentary leader and Moresby North West Member of Parliament Sir Mekere Morauta and other leaders from the province.

Sir Mekere, who was in the Highlands last week to endorse candidates for the party for the coming national elections, made the donation.

Those accompanying him included local businessman Francis Avesa, Christian Democratic Party general secretary Kowowa Pokeya and businessman Pais Alopia.

Mr Pokeya said that the donation to the school was a commitment by the then minister for education Muki Taranupi under the leadership of former prime minister Sir Mekere.

Meanwhile, councillor Yawa Ape thanked them for the timely donation to the school, adding that the money would be used to build classrooms and houses for teachers next year.
