POLICE PROBE MURDER AT BAINIMARAMA WEDDING PARTY

SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, Dec. 31) – A senior naval officer has been questioned over the death of a man at the wedding reception of the daughter of army commander Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.

The reception was held at the Yatch Club in Suva last night.

The officer is believed to be a relative of the bride.

Police say that other witnesses are also being questioned.

Divisional Crime Officer Southern Superintendent Ponsami Chetty said the man died after he was punched and kicked by other men following an argument at the party.

He died upon arrival at Suva's Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he was rushed to in a taxi.

The incident happened at around 2 a.m.

"We have begun our investigation already," Chetty said.

The victim was a 33-year-old salesman.

Chetty said police are treating the case as murder after post mortem examination revealed that the victim died of brain hemorrhage.

Earlier in the day, Commodore Bainimarama escorted the fourth of her five daughters Adi Ateca Bainimarama to the pulpit to wed her long time sweetheart Samuel Whippy.

Whippy is a member of the British Army based in the United Kingdom.
