HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, Jan. 3) - A man from Nukapu Island in the Solomon Islands’ Temotu Province who had been adrift for 12 days is reportedly well and in stable condition after being picked by a fishing vessel on New Years day.

[PIR editor’s note: The Temotu island chain, easternmost of the far-flung Solomon Islands, borders northern Fiji and includes Polynesians as well as Melanesians.]

Head of Search and Rescue Centre, Mr. Jack Bana says the fishing vessel picked up Mr. David Bawe at around half past twelve on New Year's Day, 120 nautical miles northeast of Sikaiana.

Bawe had gone fishing when strong winds carried him out into the open sea.

Bana says he received assurance yesterday from the fishing vessel that Bawe is well.

Bana says arrangements are underway with the vessel's sister ship to deliver Bawe to Honiara.
