WELLINGTON, New Zealand (RNZI, Jan. 8) - The tuna industry in the Solomon Islands is set for a major boost with the refurbishing of the country’s only tuna canning factory.

The Soltai Fishing and Processing Company has invested almost US$1 million in new machinery at the Noro factory, in the Western Province.

Soltai’s general manager Milton Sibisopere, says the refurbishing of its factory will create employment opportunities for 200 additional workers and increase production quotas.

[PIR editor’s note: An agreement was reached in February 2006 between Soltai Fishing & Processing Company and Belleville, Washington-based Tri Marine International, whereby Tri Marine would supply equipment in order to process tuna for the European market. Tri Marine]
