TONGA TOURISM CAMPAIGN TARGETS NEW ZEALAND

NUKU’ALOFA, Tonga (Tonga Now, Jan. 16) - Recovering and retaining consumer confidence in Tonga’s tourism is the reason a delegation from the Kingdom is currently conducting a promotional campaign in New Zealand.

Led by Tonga Visitors Bureau Acting CEO Sione Moala-Mafi, the group of is also targeting Travel Operators and Travel Consultants to assure them that Tonga is a desirable tourist destination through road shows.

With the help of Air New Zealand, the team will conduct seminars with tour operators and travel agents. Seminars with the travel agents and tour consultants will commence tonight, January 16, at the Spencer on Byron Hotel, North Shore. The group will continue on to Wellington and Christchurch before returning to Auckland for their final seminar. To maximize exposure and further promote the VFR market in New Zealand, the Ministry of Tourism has organized meetings on Saturday and Sunday with the Tongan Community to promote special events and the importance of tourism to Tonga. The road show is expected to continue until the 23.

The Government of Tonga has given its support to the Ministry of Tourism to embark on immediate and urgent marketing campaign by visiting its major markets of Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America. This gesture of government has been positively received by the Ministry in the midst of a projection that visitor arrivals will drastically decline over the next 6 to 12 months as a result of November 16 incident.

Tonga Now is the website of the Reform Information Office, a unit within the Office of the Minister of Finance. The unit was established to assist the Minister of Finance in disseminating information to the public.
