PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, January 25) – Papua New Guinean women will now be recognized for their efforts and contributions to the country’s growth through the newly launched Pride of PNG Awards for Women.

City Pharmacy Limited named Governor-General Sir Paulias Matane as patron and announced the awards yesterday at a brief gathering.

City Pharmacy Limited managing director Mahesh Patel said last week it partnered the law and justice sector program in Port Moresby to launch a campaign for violence against women in PNG.

Mr. Patel said the launch of the awards was timely.

"The award category will be for bravery, courage, young Papua New Guinean, community spirit, education-role model, and environment.

"We tried to cover a large broad spectrum to make it different and make every part of the community count," he said.

Mr. Patel said the major sponsors, City Pharmacy Limited and the Post-Courier, would try to go a step further in this endeavor.

"We will try extensive network both within PNG and outside PNG, assist with job placements, with apprenticeships, furthering education and also project assistance and enhancement," he said.

"We’ll be working through NGO’s, government organizations and the private sector to take these people to the next level and follow it all the way," he said.

Sir Paulias said women were just as useful and capable as men.

"Things are changing now," he said.

The number of women in responsible positions today is increasing.

"This City Pharmacy Ltd pride award will boost that initiative," Sir Paulias said.
