HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Jan. 30) – Papua New Guinea Government has allocated a new site in Port Moresby for the construction of Solomon Islands’ new High Commission Chancery Office.

The allocation of the new [also includes] PGK2.4 million [US$861,800] for construction of the High Commission building.

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Michael Somare made this announcement during a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Patteson Oti in Port Moresby over the weekend.

Mr. Oti said the PGK2.4 million has been allocated in the Solomon Islands 2007 Development Budget.

Mr. Oti and his delegation visited the site at the weekend and were impressed with the site, which is located in Central Waigani area in Port Moresby and within walking distance to the government offices as well as the other diplomatic missions.

Mr. Oti said as soon as formalities and the necessary works are completed Solomon Islands Government should begin work on its architectural design and the actual construction.

Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea His Excellency Bernard Bata’anisia also welcomes Papua New Guinea Government’s assistance with land.

He said currently the Solomon Islands High Commission is located in rented premises in Waigani area, Port Moresby.

However, he said the new site is on a prime location in Waigani City.
