NAURU TO SET UP EMBASSY IN TAIWAN

HONOLULU (Pacific Islands Report, Feb. 14) – Radio Taiwan International reports that the impoverished island nation of Nauru plans to set up an embassy in Taiwan.

The news comes amid a five-day visit to Taiwan by Nauru President Ludwig Scotty.

The Taiwan foreign ministry said Nauruan Ambassador to Taiwan, Ludwig D. Keke, is expected to present his credentials to President Chen Shui-bian soon, Radio Taiwan reports.

The ministry said that cooperation between the two countries has been good since the countries established diplomatic relations in 2005. Nauru earlier had established diplomatic relations with The People’s Republic Of China but switched allegiance to Taiwan in 2005.

Meanwhile, Radio Taiwan International also reports that Taiwan plans to bring in workers from Nauru.
