PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, Feb. 13) - The public and several security guards in Papua New Guinea bashed to death one youth and seriously injured another in Port Moresby over the weekend.

The two young men were part of a group armed with guns and knives that tried to steal a vehicle from security guards inside the Gordon industrial area.

In the process the armed youths injured several security guards who are now in serious condition at the Port Moresby General Hospital while another one is on life-support.

Metropolitan Superintendent Mark Kanawi said the security guards called for reinforcement and chased the youths and caught the two with the assistance from the general public.

Kanawi alleged the security guards and the public badly bashed the two youths up and took them into the Gordon police station.

"One of the young man died inside the cell resulting from the serious injuries sustained during the beating," Kanawi said.

He said the body was taken to the Port Moresby General Hospital for identification, while the other was also taken to the hospital but for treatment.

"Criminals must be aware that the general public is against crime and are prepared to turn over those involved to the police," Kanawi said.

Kanawi said the other eight men were still at large and is appealing to the community to assist the police in their apprehension.
