SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, Feb. 15) - People should arm themselves against those who attack them in their homes because acting in self-defense in such situations is fully justified, says Fiji magistrate Mr. Salesi Temo.

He said the increasing incidents of attacks against homeowners were alarming and as such, people should be armed themselves against people who wanted to attack them in their homes.

Temo made the comments as he bound over a Nasinu man who stoned his neighbor.

Mr. Mosese Gasaudrokodroka, 35, unemployed of Muanikoso Settlement, pleaded guilty to one count of throwing an object and another of acting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He had stoned Mr. Ronil Lal's home on January 20 at about 1:30 a.m. while Lal was having a shower. Gasaudrokodroka threw stones at Lal's dogs, who were barking at him.

Prosecutor, Sergeant Mr. Sachida Nadan told the court that Lal later armed himself with a cane knife and confronted Gasaudrokodroka.

That was after Gasaudrokodroka threw a stone at Lal, injuring his head.

A medical report was tendered in court to prove this.

Temo said while he understood why the offender was angry with the barking dog, homeowners were nowadays fully justified in being armed and wanting to protect themselves from intruders.

Gasaudrokadroka was bound over on a sum of FJ$50 [US$29] on both counts and told not to re-offend within a 12-month period.
