HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION PROBES YOUTH’S DEATH

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Daily Post, March 7) – Fiji Human Rights Commission (FHRC) has established that it is now investigating the death of 19-year-old Sakiusa Rabaka pursuing a grievance lodged to their office.

FHRC Chairperson, Dr Shaista Shameem stated that Rabaka’s mother lodged a proper complaint against the military last week and they could not reveal any additional details as the matter was now being scrutinised.

She verified that there were been at least two more complaints of alleged human rights violations by the army following the 18 initial reports.

FHRC is yet to decide whether these cases will be taken up to court.

She affirmed included are many more alleged incidents that police were investigating and they were having talks with the Director of Public Prosecution’s office in case any charges were laid for such incidents.
