SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Daily Post, Mar 22) –THOUSANDS of people in the north affected by last month’s floods are still waiting for the cash grant promised by the Interim Government.

A total of $2 million was to have been distributed about a month ago, but flood victims were informed two weeks ago that they would have to wait for a Cabinet decision.

Commissioner Northern, Misieli Naivalu confirmed the money had been approved, but referred all queries to the Director of DISMAC (Disaster Management Committee), Joeli Rokovada, who could not be reached for a comment.

It is not clear at this stage whether there will be an increase in cash grants given that there were more floods recently.

Some 1200 families were expected to receive $500 each.
