WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, April 18) – Six families from the settlement of Tekavatoetoe on Funafuti in Tuvalu were evacuated from their homes earlier this week after severe flooding from unusually high swells.

Radio Tuvalu says the families were moved to the Tuvalu Red Cross with the assistance of the Disaster Management Department, the Police and Red Cross.

One of the women rescued from her home told Radio Tuvalu the first huge wave came around four o’clock on Monday morning.

The radio quoted her saying that a series of waves swept most of their belongings out of the house.

Reports from the Tuvalu weather have attributed the swells to a recent earthquake close to Tonga worsened by a particularly high tide.
