TAIWAN PRESIDENT PRESENTS MEDAL TO SOLOMONS LEADER

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation,) – Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian has presented a medal to Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare.

Radio Taiwan International reports the medal is in recognition of Mr Sogavare's long-term support of Taiwan.

Solomon Islands is one of Taiwan's 25 remaining diplomatic allies.

On Wednesday President Chen expressed his gratitude for Prime Minister Sogavare's friendship.

Last September, Mr Sogavare made a pro-Taiwan speech at the United Nations, and his country had also voted in support of Taiwan's bid for membership in the World Health Assembly on Monday.

Prime Minister Sogavare reiterated the Solomon Islands' support for Taiwan in joining the international community, and said he would make further efforts to strengthen ties with Taiwan.
