SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, May 28) – A former chief executive in Fiji’s Ministry of Home Affairs is likely to be the Pacific Island Forum representative to the Solomon Islands.

A well-placed source at the Forum Secretariat in Suva has confirmed to PACNEWS that Dr. Lesi Korovavala will soon be appointed as the Forum’s representative to the Solomon Islands.

PACNEWS understands an office has been sought from the Forum Fisheries Agencies (FFA) based in Honiara for Dr. Korovavala.

It is the first time the Forum has selected someone from one of its member countries as its representative in the island nation.

Dr. Korovavala’s role is to liase and consult with the Solomon Islands Government on regional matters.

The position was endorsed by the Pacific Forum leaders’ meeting held in Fiji last year.

Dr. Korovavala was removed from office after the military takeover last December while he was on suspension by the ousted Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) Party led government

Meanwhile, another Fiji national is also earmarked to become the first Director-General of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) secretariat based in Port Villa, Vanuatu.

The new position, which carries a US$95,000 salary, will oversee the operations of the MSG secretariat

PACNEWS has been reliably informed that former Airports Fiji Limited (AFL) boss Sakiusa Tuisolia is one of the three candidates short listed from Fiji.

Tuisolia’s contract was not renewed by the Fiji Interim Administration when it expired early this year.

"It is the intention of the MSG that the director general commences work by June 2007 in the MSG headquarters in Port Vila, Vanuatu, on a full time basis," PNG’s high commissioner to Solomon Islands said last month.
