PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, June 7) - The National Fisheries Authority (NFA) has given funds to develop five fishing projects in East New Britain Province.

The Kokopo and Pomio fish markets, Tovot, Paulius and Merigu Fishing Projects received around PGK80,000 [US$27,449] from NFA under the project development fund.

The fund was set up to help develop and manage coastal fishing projects.

ENB provincial fisheries officer Dickson Kondaul said they had submitted applications to NFA to secure funds for projects in the province however only five projects were selected.

The Kokopo and Pomio fish markets and the Tovot fishing project will receive PGK20,000 [US$6,862] each while the other two projects will each get PGK10,000 [US$3,431].

Mr Kondaul said the cheques were given to companies in the province who will provide equipment for the projects such as coolers, freezers, banana boats and generators.

The equipment will be given to the project owners during the launch, which will take place soon.

The funds are expected to boost the revenue and services of the projects.
