U.S. INTERIOR CHIEF TO TOUR PALAU

Secretary of the Interior U.S. Government Washington, D.C. June 8, 2007

On Saturday and Sunday, June 9 and 10, 2007, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne will meet with Palau President Thomas Remengesau Jr., members of Palau Legislature and traditional leaders during the Secretary’s first visit to the Republic of Palau.

Secretary Kempthorne will join President Remengesau on tours of the new Capitol Complex in Melekeok, the Compact Road and the Rock Islands nature preserve as well as at an evening reception at the Ngarachemayong Cultural Center. The Secretary also will visit the Belau National Hospital, Palau International Coral Reef Center and the U.S. Civic Action Team Camp in Airai. A joint news conference will be held at the Ngarachemayong Cultural Center on Sunday, June 10 at 8:45 a.m.

The Rock Islands picnic with government and traditional leaders at Ngermeaus Beach will be on Saturday, June 9, from about 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., following a visit to Jelly Fish Lake. The picnic meeting is open to the news media. Later that day, the Secretary will visit the Belau National Hospital at about 4:30 p.m. and attend a reception at the Ngarachemayong Cultural Center at 7:00 p.m. Both events are open to the media.

On Sunday, following the joint news conference, Secretary Kempthorne will inspect the Compact Road (9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.) visit the new Capitol Complex (11:00 a.m.), have lunch at Bailechesau Melekeok, a traditional meeting house, and later visit the Civic Action Team Camp in Airai. These activities also are open to the news media.
