CANDIDATE’S MANAGER ESCAPES MT. HAGEN TOUGHS

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, July 3) - The campaign manager of Mt. Hagen Member of Parliament William Duma escaped possible death when supporters of a rival candidate surrounded the house he was in at Kulga village on Monday evening.

When the alleged attackers realized the man had escaped, they smashed his car with sticks and stones. A rescue party that was dispatched to assist the man were also shot at an ambush. Bullets holes had penetrated through the bull bar of the land cruiser and shattered the headlights.

And in the heart of the city, police had to fire several warning shots to disperse a fight between supporters of two rival candidates of Tambul Nebilyer early yesterday at China town. The victims said they were asking for the second and third preference votes and did not see anything wrong to go to the candidate’s stronghold to do that. They said the gunman had been identified and complaints had been lodged with the police.

Attempts to talk to police were unsuccessful.
