VANUATU PRESIDENT KELEKELE ON CHINA TOUR

HONOLULU (Pacific Islands Report, July 8) – Vanuatu President Kalkot Matas Kelekele reportedly is in Beijing at the invitation of China’s President Hu Jintao.

According to the China Daily, Kelekele arrived today on a six-day visit to include a meeting with Hu and Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo.

He was elected to a five-year term in August 2004 after the impeachment of President Alfred Maseng, who spent a month in office before it was revealed that he was serving a suspended sentence for receiving stolen goods. The Daily said bilateral relations and international issues of common concern were to be discussed.

The Vanuatu leader is also scheduled to visit Shaanxi province in northwestern China and Guangdong province near Hong Kong.
