RANDALL BILIKI, 1963 - 2007

News Release

People First Network (Pfnet) Honiara, Solomon Islands July 17, 2007

It is with deep regret and profound sadness that we must announce the passing away of Randall Biliki, Manager of the Solomon Islands People First Network.

At this time of deepest sorrow in our lives, we as working colleagues of the late Randall Biliki wish to share our sympathy with his family, relatives and all that have known him, in his sudden passing away, something that all of us will never comprehend.

The Solomon Islands has lost a great son, who has contributed many years of his life to the development of the country.

As PFnet Manager since the beginning of the project in 2001, Randall Biliki made a leading contribution in pioneering the use of technology to help improve the lives of rural people. The impacts of his work are felt across the region, and known around the world. For his staff, he was a hard working team leader who earned everyone’s respect and admiration. He had an eye of perfection in the implementation of his duties, but his leadership was always with good humour and a participative style that all his colleagues and those whom he has come across enjoyed. Through his wisdom, guidance and creativity, all rural Solomon Islanders will truly appreciate his impacts in the setting up of more than 25 rural email stations throughout the country.

He was known internationally, having represented PFnet and RDVA in regional and world-wide forums. The photograph shown here was taken at the Stockholm Challenge, 2004, in which PFnet had been a finalist and a highlight – from the comments of many of the international ICT for development practitioners whom he met there. His contribution, was therefore not only of benefit to his own country but was significant on a wider canvas.

Before joining PFnet, for nine years late Randall was Director of the National Disaster Office. He showed his great commitment in this task also, and made lasting improvements to the capacity of the country to withstand calamity. His experience gained as a director with NDO undoubtedly helped him in his outstanding work with PFnet.

Late Randall Biliki is not only a great loss to RDVA as PFnet manager but the rural people, who have benefited from the rural communication system set up in various communities in the country,

We will truly miss our manager, colleague and friend; he has left a vacuum in our lives and most importantly in his work, a set back not only for the organization but every other rural people who have benefited from his leadership, contribution and initiations

To the loved ones and relatives of Randall Biliki, your pain and your sadness in the loss of Randall are our pain and sadness, our prayers and our thoughts are with you at this moment, may our good and loving Lord comfort us all at this time.
