U.S. MARINES IN HONIARA TO MARK WWII ANNIVERSARY

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Aug. 2) - The United States Marines Band has arrived in Honiara yesterday to participate in the 65th anniversary of the landing at Guadalcanal.

The 22-member band will be taking part in the various ceremonies happening in Honiara on August 7 - the Veterans Day.

Police Media Unit representative Mick Spinks said from today to Tuesday, the public will be able to take advantage of listening to the fine music played by this internationally renowned band.

The US Marines Band will be accompanied by the Solomon Islands own SIPF Band at the various venues until Tuesday afternoon when there will be a show down between the two bands at a Battle of the Bands at Rove Police Oval.

Mr Spinks said on Tuesday there will be three ceremonies to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal.

The first being at the US War Memorial at Skyline, then another at the Vouza Memorial at Rove and the third will be the dedication of a plaque at the Yacht Club by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter ‘Walnut’.

Veterans from the United States Marines and the Solomon Islands will be in Honiara to take part in the ceremonies.
