PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, Aug. 16) - Moresby Northwest MP and PNG Party parliamentary leader Sir Mekere Morauta has been elected Leader of the Opposition.

New Ireland Governor and the Opposition’s unsuccessful nominee for Prime Minister, Sir Julius Chan, made the announcement yesterday in a joint press conference with colleague-MPs in Port Moresby.

Lae MP and New Generation Party leader Bart Philemon will be Sir Mekere’s deputy and the alternate government’s spokesman for treasury and finance issues.

Indicating that he will be returning to his province to be the head of the provincial government, Sir Julius said the alternate government will be transparent on the floor of Parliament and before the nation.

"We the governors are going to retain our elected offices as we have been elected but we will participate as spokesmen of this team, depending on what role the Leader of Opposition wants us to play. Governor Powes (Parkop), Governor John (Garia) from Chimbu and Governor Julius, that’s me. We’ll be allocated from time to time a role to play in the Opposition," he said.

People’s Labor Party leader and Markham MP Koni Iguan said his party joined the Opposition because they wanted a government that placed the emphasis on good governance and transparency.
