PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, Aug. 22) - Two warning tribes have burned down several buildings belonging to the Pina Catholic church near Wabag on Monday.

The church, a vocational centre, a primary top-school and a convent were destroyed in fierce fighting between the Sikinis and Sangalia tribes, armed with guns and an assortment of weapons.

The head of the mission Father Peter Weo said the tribes had turned the station into a battlefield and everyone had fled.

Speaking from Wabag, Father Weo said he reported the matter to the police but it appeared that no action had been taken. He estimated the damage at about PGK2 million [US$704,300].
