SAIPAN, CNMI (Mariana Variety, Aug. 29) - Tinian lawmakers and the island’s mayor, Jose P. San Nicolas, are on a weeklong trip to Taipei.

The mayor was with his legal counsel Joey P. San Nicolas, Senate President Joseph M. Mendiola and Rep. Edwin P. Aldan.

Variety was told the group’s travel was funded by the government.

From Taiwan, Mayor San Nicolas will go on a "personal trip" to the Philippines. He’s expected to be back on Saturday. They will meet with some investors in Taipei who are interested in Tinian’s noni products, Variety was told. The trip is supposedly part of the preliminary discussions with "potential investors."

The mayor is also finalizing negotiations to bring some animals to Tinian as additional features in the island’s wildlife park. The Taiwanese government wants to assist Tinian by donating animals to the wildlife park, Variety was told. The mayor’s office has informed the Department of Public Lands and the Department of Land and Natural Resources about this possible donation of animals.

Variety tried to get the amount spent for the official trip but the director of finance on Tinian, Theodocia Sanchez, said she had no information as she just came back from a vacation and was "loaded with lots of office work."
