SAMOA TO PAY ATHLETES $37,000 FOR GAMES MEDALS

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, Sept. 12) – Team Samoa’s gold medal winning athletes at the recently completed South Pacific Games will receive financial recognition for their efforts today in Apia

In a government incentive, rolled out before the Games, each gold medal was valued at around US$850 or about 2,000 Samoan tala.

Samoa won 43 gold, seven short of its goal.

Stand out winners were the Opeloge family, with its three weightlifters picking up three gold each, and track star, Aunese Curreen, who won three gold in the 800, 1500 and 5,000 metres.
