PAPEETE, Tahiti (Tahitipresse, Oct. 30) – Some 32 Tahitian tattoo specialists plus a dozen others from throughout the world will participate in the 3rd International Tahitian Tattoo Convention in Tahiti from Nov. 7-11. This year's theme will be "Tattooing for Women".

More than 45 stands will be set up for the tattooers and another 40 stands will

present the latest creative jewelry art and crafts at the Aorai Tini Hau Hall in Tahiti's north coast Commune of Pirae.

"It's primarily a professional event that allows tattooers to meet each other," said Jérôme Lévy, who recently announced the details of this year's convention. The exhibition aims to "promote tattooing and the Tahitian artists at the local and international levels, to make the art of tattooing known."

This year's event will be televised on Tahiti Nui Television (TNTV), one of two local TV channels.

This year's international participants will be coming to Tahiti from Canada, Japan, Denmark and New Zealand to discover the source of Polynesian tattooing. Speaking of the invited guests, Lévy said, "We have selected them for their work and experience, but also for their originality."

For Lévy, tattooing is "an artistic creation mover" and a booming art in full development. "We see more and more young people are becoming tattooed. It's a way to identify with their culture," said Eric Gresset, a tattooer in Tahiti.

This year's event will include photo exhibitions, musical entertainment, an awareness effort involving hygiene and, of course, tattooing demonstrations. The event will end on Nov. 10 with an announcement of this year's best tattoo.
