SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, Nov. 14) – The price of unleaded gasoline went up by 8 cents yesterday in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands—bringing to 16 cents the total price increase in less than two weeks as the prices of fuel in the international market soar to record highs.

Consumers were caught by surprise yesterday to learn that Mobil Oil Mariana Islands had increased the price of its unleaded fuel to US$3.76 a gallon from US$3.68 a gallon last week.

Shell Marianas was also expected to raise its fuel prices soon.

Gas retailers in Rota and Tinian are now selling gasoline for above US$4 a gallon.

Mobil and Shell, the only fuel suppliers in the Northern Marianas, claim the high cost of doing business in remote islands in the Pacific is taking its toll on their pricing.
