KOROR, Palau (Palau Horizon, Dec. 31) – Palau President Tommy Remengesau says starting on New Year’s Day, his administration will implement austerity measures to cut fuel consumption.

Remengesau said he wants to see a reduction in the government’s energy cost and more accountability in the use of government assets.

Due to the rise of fuel prices in Palau, the cost of running the government is also going up, he added.

"We can’t control the price of fuel, but we can control our usage," he said.

He urged government employees to do their part by practicing energy conservation at the workplace.

He noted that some government services should not be affected by the rise in fuel prices such as the operation of water and sewer pumps.
