SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, Jan. 7) - Fiji has lost more than 2,000 people as a result of their migrating to Canada, says Fiji's High Commissions former Business Development Manager Ashwant Dwivedi.

Mr. Dwivedi says Canada's National Statistical agency, Statistics Canada has highlighted that in the past five-year period (2001 to 2006) a total of 2,455 Fijian nationals have migrated to Canada.

Dwivedi believes that this migration trend is adding value to Fiji's export industry and this is an area that needs to be strengthened.

According to Statistics Canada, the highest migration from Fiji to Canada was reported between 1991 to 1995 when a total of 5,020 Fiji nationals permanently migrated to Canada.

He said the announcement and recent Statistics Canada numbers reconfirms that Canada remains a hot market for Fiji's export claiming that the Canadian market is both sustainable and profitable.
