APIA, Samoa (Samoa Observer, Jan. 24, 2008) - Consumers are advised that the cost of electricity will increase by 7.5 percent from 1 February 2008.

This is in addition to the current 15 percent fuel surcharge so that the total cost increase will be 22.3 percent.

The Electric Power Corporation (EPC) says this price increases applied to all electricity meters read from 1 February 2008. The EPC says that since the last tariff surcharge adjustment on 1 February 2007, fuel prices have increased by 18 percent.

During this time the Electric Power Corporation (EPC) has absorbed the continuing increase in the cost of fuel by overstretching its financial resources.

These rising costs, due to overseas factors beyond our control, have now made it absolutely necessary for the Corporation to adjust its electricity tariff rates to ensure that the supply of electricity to our customers is always made readily available.

The EPC wishes to inform the public and all of its consumers of the prices as follows:

These tariff rates will also be applied to all consumers using Prepayment meters from 01 February 2008.
