Compact, preserve, war in Iraq discussed

KOROR, Palau (Palau Horizon, March 3, 2008) — United States Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne on Monday met President Remengesau on Monday in Washington D.C. to talk on a number of issues including the possible creation of a National Heritage area on Peleliu to commemorate the World War II batte.

According to a press release from the Department of Interior (DOI), the talk between Kempthorne and Remengesau also centered on the upcoming review of the Compact of Free Association.

In return, Kempthorne thanked the president for the country’s continued support for the War on Terror and Palauan citizens who continue to join the United States military.

The president during the meeting said that the security and stability in Palau is very important and that it is also essential to the relationship between Palau and the United States.

Kempthorne visited Palau in June and toured the Compact Road.

Kempthorne also congratulated Remengesau on being honored and recognized last Oct. as one of the Time Magazine’s Heroes of the Environment.

The president is in Washington D.C. to participate in the annual Coral Reef Task Force meeting.
