Joint participation in alternative energy projects

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, March 21, 2008) – The Minister for Mines and Energy Edward Huniehu and the World Bank representative, Antonie de Wilde have signed an agreement paving the way for joint participation in the development of sustainable and alternative energy in the country.

The signing took place in Honiara last night before Mr Wilde flew back to Washington DC early this morning with a copy of the agreement document.

Chairman of the Board of Solomon Islands Electricity Authority, Walton Naezon witnessed the signing.

Mr Huniehu says the document which spelt out potential and viable sources of energy development in certain parts of the country is part of an on-going research and survey of potential locations throughout the country.

He says the concept is to develop alternative energy using hydro-power.

Mr Huni'ehu says sustainable energy development will in future extend to the mining sector.

He says his Ministry will prepare a Cabinet Paper on areas of energy development for the executive government to endorse.
