Uncounted ballots give former governor new hope

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, April 1, 2008) – Papua New Guinea's former prime minister Paias Wingti could be on the verge of a political resurrection after a judge ordered a recount in his seat from last year's national poll.

Western Highlands governor Tom Olga sprung one of the biggest upsets at last year's national elections when he beat Mr Wingti.

Mr Wingti filed a petition and was rewarded when a judge found the election manager overseeing the count had omitted ballot boxes and acted illegally.

The judge has ordered a recount of more than 640 ballot boxes with the result to be presented to the national court in early May.
