High pressure system brings smog

SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, May 26, 2008) – Industrial pollutants and dust from Asia are affecting the Marianas, the National Weather Station in Tiyan announced yesterday.

According to NWS, high pressure centered northeast of the Marianas and light upper level winds are helping to circulate the industrial pollutants and dust moving off of the Asian mainland southward from the mid-Pacific towards the Mariana Islands.

However, NWS assured that this haze, or smog, will only have a minor effect on visibility and sky conditions.

NWS stressed that the Anatahan volcano is currently quiet and is not a factor in producing the haze.

By today, NWS said rain showers and changes in the upper level transport winds could help replace the haze with cleaner air of more tropical origin.
