New Zealander to take up post next month

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, June 10, 2008) - The recently-appointed Supervisor of Election, New Zealand’s Department of Conservation lawyer Felicity Heffernan, will be in Fiji next week to sign her contract, says the Constitutional Offices Commission.

Commission chair Rishi Ram said yesterday Ms. Heffernan indicated to him she would be in next week to sign up and finalize her housing arrangements.

"She will officially take up her post next month but will be here a few weeks before that to finalize the details," Mr. Ram said.

Heffernan, of Wellington, New Zealand, has a bachelor of law from the University of Canterbury.

Mr. Ram said she was an experienced lawyer who had served stints in Asia, Africa and South America.

Her appointment was made after the post was vacated by New Zealand lawyer Dr Maurice Coughlan less than a week after the COC appointed him, following revelations he’d been disbarred from the New Zealand Bar for 15 years.
