NUKUALOFA, Tonga (Matangi Tonga, June 11, 2008) –Tonga's Crown Law Department has submitted an application to the Supreme Court of Tonga for a Contempt of Court order against two local newspapers the Taimi 'o Tonga and the Kele'a.

The Solicitor General Linda Folaumoetau'I confirmed today that the application against Kalafi Moala, the Editor in Chief of the Taimi 'o Tonga, and Faka'osi Maama, its Tonga Editor, was for Contempt of Court.

Linda said that another application, also for Contempt of Court had been filed against the publisher and editor of the Kele'a Po'oi Pohiva, together with the New Zealand lawyer, Nalesoni Tupou, for an article that was published in the Kele'a.

The Contempt of Court applications related to two separate articles that were published by the two weekly papers relating to deaths at the Shoreline building during the riots of November 16, 2006.

Linda said that the hearing of the Shoreline case is pending in the Supreme Court, and a date for the hearing of the applications has not been set.
