Council members named in Lenakel town

PORT VILA (Vanuatu Daily Post, July 15, 2008) - The first ever Lenakel Municipal Council (LMC) members have been appointed — ten days after Blackman town was declared the third municipal town in the country.

Minister of Internal Affairs Joe Natuman made the appointments last week when he signed the 30 appointment letters of members of the council representing different stakeholders and interest groups from around the new municipality area.

The names of the 30 appointees were not made available to media as they are yet to confirm their acceptance letters to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In his official statement Natuman stated that the appointments were made based on nominations submitted to his office by the stakeholders.

Natuman confirmed that the new council members will receive training from the Ministry staff and also from the Physical Planning Unit in the coming weeks in preparation towards the actual operations of the new town council.

He also expressed hope the new council will be able to elect a new Mayor to head up the council.

The Internal Affairs boss commented that this new development on Tanna was not a new thing, but to them it is a promise come true.

"People in Tanna have always believed that Lenakel is the door way to the outside world right from the beginning," he said.

Given the background of the Blackman town’s commercial centre, Mr Natuman said the introduction of Unelco services in 1998 commercial activity at Lenakel has increased.

Minister Natuman also confirmed that all the lands within the declared area belong to the custom owners.

The proposed Tafea Physical Planning area for Lenakel town extends from one southern bridge of Lenapalwalu creek starting at the Lenami Bridge to Kamoloikin Bridge and Nuknauk Bridge to the north—covering around 651, 600 square metres.

Meanwhile Daily Post understands another council has been formed by people from Louiniou to run the Municipality
