Nearly $2 million in fees collected this year

SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, July 31, 2008) – Fiji’s Immigration Department is finding good business in passports with 40,000 issued so far this year netting close to FJ$3 million [US$1.9 million].

Immigration director Commander Viliame Naupoto told Fijilive that the passports are mainly needed for those that work or visit abroad rather than for migration.

"We have more people working outside of the country for example in Iraq, Kuwait, and the security companies and there are family members who travel to visit them," he explained.

He said the 40,000 passports were issued before the middle of this year.

Naupoto adds that most of the passports issued last year were for those seeking renewal.

"Most of the people who had their passports done in 1987 had them renewed last year and some of them are doing it this year," he said.

Naupoto said his department brought in 20,000 passports last month and now they are down to 12,000.
