Memorial service marks bloody ‘Battle for Guadalcanal’

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, August 6, 2008) – This Thursday, August 7, marks the 66th anniversary of the World War Two landing of the US Marines on Guadalcanal. It began what is now known as "The Battle for Guadalcanal".

The Memorial Service starts 7am at the US Memorial on Skyline Ridge. It then moves to the Sergeant-Major Vouza Statue outside the Police Headquarters, Rove.

The United States Marine Corp is being represented by Colonel Paul Wapensky. There will be a four-soldier American Military Colour Guard. American veterans, together with their families are attending.
