GUADALCANAL WOMEN: DON’T PUT GUNS IN HANDS OF POLICE Remembering chaos of ethnic tension in Solomons

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, Nov. 4, 2008) – Women in Northwest Guadalcanal constituency strongly oppose the rearming of the local police force.

SIBC [Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corp.'s North-west Guadalcanal correspondent John Toki quotes leader of a women's group in the constituency, Bernadette Uro as saying that the decision was made during a women's meeting at Visale parish last week.

She says that although some of the country's leaders have suggested that the government start considering re-arming the police, women in North-west Guadalcanal oppose the idea.

Ms Uro says that being victims of what had happened during the ethnic tension period, which had caused their families a lot of unwanted hardship, they don't want a repeat of that situation.

The women say there's no need to re-arm the police nor the public as there's no threat against the sovereignty of the country.
