Troops answer call for help after tot killed

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Nov. 12, 2008) - Two teams of RAMSI [Regional Assistance Mission Solomon Islands] police dispatched last Friday to Malaita and Central provinces killed a total of 11 crocodiles as of Monday.

The team sent to the Russell Islands destroyed 10 animals over the three nights.

A second team dispatched to Atoifi, shot and killed a 2.8m crocodile near the community of Ulubala.

The Commander of the RAMSI’s Participating Police Force (PPF), Denis McDermott, said he was satisfied with the success of the teams.

"These are highly trained and skilled officers," he said. "I’m sure I speak for all of them when I say that RAMSI is very pleased to be able to help protect the people of Solomon Islands in this way," Mr .McDermott said.

The two teams were sent in response to a request for assistance following the death of a young girl who was taken from the village of Ale by a crocodile earlier this month.

RAMSI promised to destroy crocodiles and urges anyone with concerns about these dangerous animals in their area to report the matter to their local police.
