MOON’S CHURCH ‘CULT’ UNWELCOME IN SOLOMONS ‘Global Peace Festival undeterred b y criticism

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Nov. 28, 2008) – Organizers of the controversial Global Peace Festival in the Solomon Islands this weekend are defiant.

Despite widespread public criticisms and calls for boycott, organisers say the festival, which climax tomorrow, will continue to the end.

Global Peace Federation, which is part of Rev Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church, organised the festival.

Festival activities started last week and ends tomorrow at Lawson Tama stadium where there will be music and cultural performances.

Churches here have urged their members not to be part of it, saying the festival was a front for Rev. Moon’s Unification Church.

The Christian church sees the Unification Church as a cult, which has its roots in Korea. Founder Rev. Moon, a self-claimed prophet, is a very wealth man. He visited Solomon Islands in 2006.

The Government has also turned its back on the festival, announcing it’s not going to be part of it. This is despite an official invitation from organisers.

But in spite of the negative treatment they are receiving from local authorities, organisers remained defiant and are determined to see the festival ends successfully tomorrow.

They’ve been promoting the festival since last month in the media, through news releases and paid advertisement.

Today, they took a full page colour ad on page 3 of the Solomon Star.

Organisers insisted the festival was part of their contribution towards the government’s peace process.

And they are urging members of the public to come and see for themselves at Lawson Tama tomorrow.
