BAINIMARAMA TO ATTEND PACIFIC FORUM ‘I look forward to constructive engagement’

SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, ) – Fiji’s interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama says he is ready to meet Pacific leaders in Papua New Guinea later this month.

In his New Year’s message, Bainimarama reaffirmed his attendance at the Special Forum leaders meeting on January 27, which would decide Fiji’s continued membership.

"I will be attending the forum leaders’ meeting this month and I look forward to constructive engagement and dialogue that will be in the interest of our country," he said.

Bainimarama’s Government has come under criticism for failing to commit to the early 2009 election deadline it had promised at the Forum leaders’ meeting in Niue last year.

Suspension from the Pacific Islands Forum would spell more trouble for Fiji, but Bainimarama is adamant that his Government will not be bullied into submitting to outside demands.

"As I said to you at the beginning of 2008, Fiji has the potential and we all have the will and ability to take it to another level. Don’t pay heed to the merchants of doom and gloom and misinformation," he said.

"They will come and go but we as a people must forge ahead with a sense of realism, positivity and pride."
