Last seen in waters between Lomaiviti and Viti Levu

SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, Jan. 14, 2009) – Fiji Police have sent a distress team to sea after 24 people were reported missing in waters between the Lomaiviti Group and Viti Levu.

Police spokeswoman Ema Mua confirmed to FijiLive that the group was from Gau and was travelling to Suva.

"From the information we have, the group left Qarani Village this afternoon around 2.45 p.m. and had yet to reach its destination,"" she said.

She said the group consisted of 18 adults and six children. The youngest on board is a four-month-old baby.

Mua said police believed the group was drifting along Toberua Passage.

Police have urged members of the public not to take risks and stay on land and higher ground during flooding.

Mariners and people living along the coastal areas have been requested to keep an eye out for the missing group and report any discovery to the nearest police station.
