MAJURO, Marshall Islands (Yokwe, Jan. 7, 2009) - The first edition of Voyaging Together To A New Life: A Handbook for Newcomers to Hawai΄i, published in November 2008, is now available online (

This 80 page book, full of beautiful art, helpful information, and low or no-cost resources, is a true community effort.

The intent of the book is to provide an acculturation tool for those from the Freely Associated States (FAS) moving to Hawai΄i.

"It can be helpful for those Marshallese and Chuukese moving to Guam, Saipan and the US mainland as well," said Christina Simmons, Program Director for Hawai΄i’s Parent Information Resource Center.

Topics included in both the Marshallese and Chuukese editions are:

The three Appendices include a simple recipe to treat head lice, documents you need before leaving RMI with a child and information about Hawai΄i QUEST, the state medical insurance.

The Newcomers Handbook was born through a partnership between the Hawai΄i Parent Information Resource Center (HPIRC), Goodwill Industries, City & County of Honolulu, and the State of Hawai΄i Departments of Health, Attorney General, and Office of Community Services.

Director Simmons encourages these FAS citizens to share this resource with family and friends. The online handbook may be downloaded in PDF format and printed.

"We hope it proves helpful to those who have decided to set their sails on a course to a new life."
